| HISTORY: The Red Lion is possibly the longest
running purpose-built hotel in England. It was built
over 750 years ago to house the many draughtsmen
working on the nearby cathedral. During recent times,
many modern facilities have been added to the hotel
without spoiling its unique character and atmosphere.
There is a fine collection of antiques throughout the hotel
-- especially the many clocks -- including 'Parliament
Clocks' and, in particular, the 'Skeleton and Organ
Clock' in the reception hall. In fine weather, you can
dine al fresco in the magnificent vine-covered courtyard.
BAR: In the comfortable bar, there is a large selection
of sandwiches and baguettes, as well as an extensive
menu of interesting hot and cold dishes.
RESTAURANT: The restaurant has a delightful
ambience with its fine china collection and "wattle and
daub" walls dating back to the 13th century. There is an
extensive choice on the menu of both English and
Continental cuisine, with starters such as baked
tomatoes and melted mozzarella or quenelles of prawn
and chive mousse, followed by braised lamb shank,
grilled duck breast, poached salmon and seabass, plus
pasta dishes. Choux swan chantilly, lemon mousse or
crème brúlée, are some of the tempting desserts
available. Food is also served on Sundays, which
includes a choice of roasts, and there is a comprehensive
wine list to savour.
